Relocation and New Collaborations

In the pursuit of enhancing their sculpting endeavors, Tom Schomberg and Cynthia made a significant decision to relocate to Southern California. This move was primarily driven by the necessity to work with a foundry that was more conveniently located. They chose the American Fine Arts Foundry in Burbank, California, to facilitate their projects.

“We moved to Southern California where there was a need, to use a foundry that was closer in proximity.”

One of the notable projects undertaken during this period was the War Dog Memorial. This sculpture was designed to honor military service dogs and was installed in a military cemetery in Rhode Island.

The War Dog Memorial and Beyond

The War Dog Memorial project marked a significant milestone in the sculpting journey, with its installation in a military cemetery in Rhode Island. This project was not only a testament to artistic skill but also to effective collaboration and management. Brett played a crucial role as the on-site manager, ensuring the smooth installation of the sculpture.

“That sculpture was to be placed and is placed, in a military cemetery in Rhode Island.”

The success of this project inspired further production efforts. During the creation of the War Dog Memorial, the team realized the potential for more work, focusing on achieving smooth surfaces and intricate details. Brett and Angel have been instrumental in these ongoing efforts, contributing significantly to the production of additional works.

“Ever since then, we have had nothing, but great results.”

Tom Schomberg’s creation of the War Dog Memorial was deeply influenced by his early years as an athlete, where he developed a profound appreciation for the human form in motion. His athletic background instilled in him an intimate understanding of strength, movement, and the intricate mechanics of the body—all of which became central themes in his art. This love for the human form drove Schomberg to capture not just physical likeness but the emotional depth of his subjects.

Collaborating with the expert artisans at American Fine Arts Studio, Schomberg embarked on a monumental undertaking that married his artistic vision with their exceptional craftsmanship. The foundry’s technical expertise played a crucial role in bringing his vision to life. Together, they transformed a powerful concept into a lasting tribute.

The process began with Schomberg crafting a detailed maquette—a small-scale model that encapsulated the intricate details and emotional power he sought to convey. Influenced by his athletic understanding of form and movement, this maquette served as a guide for the foundry’s artisans. They then set to work on the complex task of mold making, meticulously ensuring that every aspect of Schomberg’s design—from the lifelike textures of the dogs’ fur to the solemn expressions on the soldiers’ faces—was faithfully reproduced in bronze. The result was a memorial that not only honored its subjects but also reflected Schomberg’s lifelong passion for the beauty and strength of the human form.
