Visualization: Imagining the Monumental
American Fine Arts Foundry (AFA) collaborated with sculptor Bill Mack to create the monumental “IMAGINE” cubes. The project is highlighted as a testament to the power of teamwork between artist and foundry, with AFA meticulously crafting the bronze blocks to embody Mack’s vision. The cubes were installed with precision at the Four Seasons Hotel in Minneapolis for the “Imagine Falling Blocks – Unveiling” event on June 29, 2022, transforming the space and inviting reflection and awe.
Forging the Future: How AFA Scales Monumental Art with Innovation, Craft, and Vision
There’s a story behind every monumental sculpture—a story of vision, ingenuity, and unwavering dedication. At American Fine Arts Foundry (AFA), that story begins with a bold ambition: not just to cast bronze, but to craft legacies. As we move into 2025 and beyond, our mission is clear—to partner with architects, public art commissioners, and professional artists to bring grand, durable, meaningful works into the world. And to do that, we are doing more than scaling up: we are evolving how we imagine, plan, and build.
From Inspiration to Monument: The Journey Explained
Visualization & Design
Everything starts with vision. When an architect or artist imagines a grand public piece—shade structures, public commemoratives, sculptural installations—what matters is not only what it looks like, but where it stands, how it engages the space, how light and scale come into play.
We work closely with conceptual artists and designers, running digital renderings, 3D models, and even immersive visualizations. Early on, we ask: How will this interact with the environment? What will make it feel inevitable—like it belongs here? These tools don’t replace craft; they augment it. They help us foresee challenges—weather, balance, structure—and plan ahead rather than react.
Maquettes & Prototyping
Before even the first full-size bronze panel is cast, we build maquettes—small-scale, tactile previews of what is to come. These are our testbeds. They let us see how light falls, how forms read from different angles, where stresses or joints need structural reinforcement. For our monumental commissions, refining this step is critical: the difference between a sculpture that resonates and one that merely occupies space.
Engineering & Forge-Technology Integration
This is where our obsessive dedication to emerging technology truly shines. Monumental art does more than look large—it must stand large. Engineering becomes inseparable from artistry. At AFA, we integrate structural modeling, material science, and modern fabrication tools (CNC, 3D printed molds or parts, advanced alloys) with timeless techniques like lost-wax casting, patination, and fine finishing.
We are building systems: digital project pipelines, quality tracking, and robust safety and installation protocols. These aren’t optional; they are essential when working with architects, municipalities, and public spaces that demand accountability, durability, and elegance.
Casting & Finishing
When it’s time to cast, there is no cutting corners. Massive molds, exacting bronze pours, carefully controlled cooling—all executed with precision so that every surface, every contour, every texture faithfully carries the artist’s intent. Our artisan finishers then take over: sanding, welding, assembling, refining. Finally, patination gives that living skin to the bronze—its tone, its character—matched to the design and the site.
Installation & Legacy
A monument is never truly complete when casting ends. Transport, site preparation, foundation work, mounting, environmental integration—these are all part of the final act. We partner closely with architects, engineers, installation specialists, and stakeholders to make sure the artwork is safely anchored, properly lit, and beautifully presenting years after its unveiling. We think in decades. We want what we make to be named, remembered, respected.
Why This Matters: The Premium Difference
In an age of fast turn-arounds and low cost, AFA is choosing a different path. We believe there is a higher standard—one defined by scale, integrity, vision, and the ability to deliver monumental work that transforms space and elevates communities.
Here is what differentiates this approach:
- Margin & Sustainability: Big projects allow us to operate with higher profit margins (50–60%), which means we can reinvest in craft, people, tools, and quality.
- Fewer but Bigger Relationships: Instead of hundreds of one-off small commissions, we aim for strategic partnerships—architects, public art agencies, professional artists who understand the value, respect the process, and expect excellence.
- Reputation as Leverage: Every large, successful installation becomes evidence of our capacity. As we deliver more visible public works, our brand becomes a signal: if you want something durable, bold, and beautifully engineered, you come to AFA.
- Technology + Process as Advantage: AI-enhanced project management, advanced CRM, digital modeling, prototyping—these aren’t bells and whistles. They are the backbone enabling us to scale monumental work without sacrificing quality, reliability, or craft.

The Future in Motion
As we step into this new phase, our commitments at AFA are evolving to match the magnitude of our aims:
- To be the go-to foundry for projects of scale and prestige—public art, architectural sculpture, landmark installations.
- To embed technology into every step—pre-qualifying, prospecting, planning, execution, communication—while preserving what makes art visceral: the craft, the intuition, the warmth.
- To build a legacy not just in bronze, but in systems: clean, transparent, transferable, profitable, proud.
If you are an architect with a vision that needs a fabricator who understands both design and deliverability; or a public art commissioner looking for excellence; or an artist ready to scale your ideas into monuments—let’s collaborate. Together, we’ll make works that endure, that matter, that transform.
